With the launch of the iPhone 14 models yesterday, Apple introduced a new Emergency SOS via satellite feature designed to allow iPhone users to get emergency help in off-the-grid areas even when there’s no cellular or Wi-Fi connection. is available.
Apple currently uses Globalstar satellites for the venture, but Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, claimed today that his company has had “promising talks with Apple about Starlink connectivity”.
Musk says the “iPhone” team is “super smart” and that the space for “iPhone” communications will work best if “if phone software and hardware adapt to space-based signals versus Starlink purely emulating a cell tower.”
We’ve had some promising conversations with Apple about Starlink connectivity. iPhone team is based on super smart. Closing the link from space to the phone certainly works best if the phone software and hardware adapts to space-based signals versus Starlink purely emulating a cell tower. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 8, 2022
Apple has made no mention of any discussions with SpaceX regarding Starlink, and it is unknown if Apple has any plans to form some form of partnership to use Starlink technology.
SpaceX and Tesla even announced a partnership in August for a new “satellite-to-cellular” service that would link second-generation Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit to T’s mid-band 5G spectrum. -Mobile to provide “almost complete coverage” in most areas in the United States.
Unlike Apple’s satellite feature that requires an “iPhone 14”, T-Mobile’s and SpaceX’s solution should work with existing smartphones. The service won’t launch until late 2023, so there are still some details for SpaceX and T-Mobile to work out.
Apple’s satellite communications feature is designed for emergencies and is used to send short text messages to emergency services so that iPhone users can get help anywhere. It requires a clear line of sight to the sky for a satellite to connect, and Apple’s service is free for now.
