Vollebak’s latest garment, dubbed the Mars Hoodie, is designed to make you feel at home, even when you’re 249 million miles from home.
“Life on an early Mars base will be intense — because we’ll have to rebuild everything we take for granted here on Earth. It means downtime will be key,” said Nick and Steve Tidball, founders of Vollebak, a clothing company that prides itself on bringing fashion and innovation together. “Built by the same machines that build beds, the Mars Hoodie is the ultimate comfy hoodie — it’s what you’ll wear when you’re watching your favorite TV show from Earth on another planet.”
Life on Mars probably won’t be as flashy as Elon Musk would have us believe. We’ll literally set up a new civilization there, and with that kind of hard work, a nice comfy bed is more likely what you want than a jetpack or exoskeleton. Keeping in mind the realities of the kind of rigorous work that civilization-building entails, Vollebak’s Mars Hoodie is made for comfort and stress relief. Almost like having a weighted blanket or mattress wrapped around you, this 3D knit hoodie comes with a tactile surface inspired by Mars’ crater landscape, the cooling system on spacesuits, and the inflatable houses you’ll likely live in the first. few generations.
“Usually, astronauts on the International Space Station float around in t-shirts and khakis. That means we’ll also need clothes to help us relax on Mars,” notes Vollebak. “It doesn’t all have to come with advanced robotics, built-in life support systems or heads-up gold visors to block out the sun’s rays, we also need loungewear.”
The Mars Hoodie is a double-layered, weighted, 3D knitted hoodie made from multi-dimensional fabric, utilizing a technology currently used to make beds. The machine is a whopping 2 meters high, with eight wire feed units that can be individually programmed to knit a single pixel or bit into the textile. During the knitting process, the area between the top and bottom layers is pushed full of yarn and allowed to expand, giving it its custom puffy 3D appearance. Basically, the machine is capable of weaving the jacket from fibers and filling it with the same fibers at the same time.
Available in white or black, the Mars Hoodie is made from 50% recycled nylon and 50% virgin nylon. It is also embedded with antibacterial silver microparticles. These kill germs, bacteria and odors and extend the life of your hoodie. “Because you really don’t want bacteria floating around in space. That never ends well in the movie,” the Tidball brothers say casually.
The puffy design of the hoodie almost feels like you have a duvet wrapped around you. Several studies have shown that using a weighted blanket can help reduce stress and improve sleep quality – a feature the Mars Hoodie is proud to wear on its sleeve. A sturdy zip and drawstrings around the hood help you secure your garment around your body, while a soft inner lining helps keep you comfortable for long periods of time. On the outside of the Mars Hoodie you will find two large zip pockets, which you can use to store things or put your hands in on a cold day. Wondering what to do on hot days? Well, the hoodie is also breathable and wicks away moisture beautifully, making it literally perfect to wear every day on Mars, the ISS or even on Earth.
